The Series 40 Smart Ratchet block is used for jib and spinnaker sheets on dinghies, skiffs and catamarans. Its load-sensitive ratchet engages for up to 14:1 holding power when the sheet is loaded and disengages when released, allowing the sheet to run freely for smooth tacks and gybes.
Attentive design and precision CNC machining have produced a sheave that keeps line wear to a minimum, so you get more sailing out of a set of sheets, and the two-stage ball bearing system provides exceptionally low friction at high loads.
The headpost now swivels 360 degrees, independent of the load adjustment collar. Actuation of the ratchet pawl (now in a special aluminium bronze alloy with a Nickel-Teflon surface finish) is achieved with a fatigue resistant multi-coil spring.
The Smart Ratchet features a unique adjustment mechanism that allows you to precisely set the load at which the ratchet engages. A higher setting will keep the ratchet off for light air sailing or until the sheet load increases, while a lower setting will trigger the ratchet at a lower sheet load. The adjustment can also be used to respond to the sheet load you feel in you hand. Younger sailors appreciate this feature because they can set a lower engagement load to match their own strength.
